Things to Consider

Weather / Activity Level

Many areas of Kenya (especially the highlands like Nairobi and the Rift Valley) typically see daytime highs around 68–79°F and nighttime lows around 50–59°F. Pack a warm fleece for early morning drives and lightweight, breathable fabrics for midday heat. Most days involve a moderate activity level, including walking, sightseeing, cultural experiences, and optional excursions, so comfortable footwear is recommended.

Packing & Attire

Luggage Rules

  • For internal bush flights (e.g., Nairobi to Maasai Mara), you must use soft-sided duffel bags

  • Many have a strict 15kg (33 lbs) limit.

Clothing

  • DO: Stick to neutral tone colored clothing (khaki, tan, olive) to blend in.

  • DON'T: Wear black, dark blue clothing, or bright colors during safari rides as it can attract insects and stand out more in wildlife areas

  • DON'T: Wear camouflage or military-pattern clothing is unlawful for civilians in Kenya.

Useful Items

  • High-quality binoculars (8x42 or 10x42)

  • Universal Type G (UK-style) power adapter.

Currency

The local currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES). Credit cards are accepted in many hotels and larger establishments, but we recommend carrying some cash for markets, tips, and small vendors. ATMs are available in cities.

Itinerary

Passports & Visas

Before you go, U.S. citizens must obtain a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) online — this replaces the old visa-on-arrival system. You cannot board a flight to Kenya without it.

To apply for a visa, you’ll need:

  • A valid U.S. passport (at least 6 months beyond your arrival date, February 17th, 2027, with one blank page)

  • A recent passport-style photo

  • Travel details (arrival/departure dates, flights, accommodation)

  • A credit or debit card to pay the government fee (~ $34 USD)

Step-by-Step Visa Application

  1. Go to the official e Kenya Government eTA site portal: https://www.etakenya.go.ke/

  2. Start a new application: Choose “Apply Now,” and fill in your personal, passport, travel, and contact information.

  3. Upload required documents: Include your passport details and a photo that meets passport standards.

  4. Pay the eTA fee: The electronic authorization fee is paid online with your card.

  5. Submit and wait for approval: Processing time is typically about 3 business days, though it can take longer.

  6. Save/print your approval: Once approved, you’ll receive your eTA by email. Print it or save it on your device to present at immigration when you arrive.

Visa Timing & Tips

  • Apply early: At least 1–2 weeks before travel to avoid last-minute issues or processing delays. The eTA is typically valid for a single entry up to 90 days for tourism or business so don't secure a visa prior to May 19th, 2026.

  • Print a copy: Even though it’s electronic, having a printed copy can make arrival smoother.

  • Airlines check before boarding: Most carriers will not allow you to board without an approved eTA.

Arrival Documents: You may be asked for proof of return flight and accommodation bookings

Vaccinations

General Vaccinations

Ensure routine shots (MMR, Polio, Tetanus) are current. Recommended travel vaccines include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Cholera (for rural travel).

Yellow Fever

The yellow fever vaccine is not required for direct entry into Kenya from the United States, as the U.S. is not considered a country with Yellow Fever (YF) risk; however, it becomes mandatory if you've traveled from or transited through a YF-risk country (in Africa or South America) within 12 hours or more within the last 30 days

Malaria

Malaria Prophylaxis: Highly recommended for all areas under 8,200ft (most safari parks and coastal areas). Consult a travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure to choose between Malarone, Doxycycline, or Mefloquine.

First Aid Essentials

Pack anti-diarrheal medication (Imodium), oral rehydration salts, sunscreen (SPF 50+), and insect repellent with at least 30% DEET or Picaridin.
